Mt Toubkal, Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Yep, it’s the itch again. This time I scratched and found myself signing up for another ADI expedition to Mt Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

It’s been a while since I climbed and with work extending into 2017, my plans were somewhat thwarted; so settling for a shorter climb seemed the right thing to do.

Mt Toubkal is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains at 4,167 metres. Accessible through Marrakech and surrounds, the Atlas Mountains is situated approx 500kms from the Sahara Desert. I am absolutely keen to see the dessert from the high point in the Atlas Mountains. Can’t wait.

Mt Toubkal is climbed in 2-3 days. It is a steep but short climb, so fitness is a critical factor. I’ve signed up for a 2 day photographic tour to the Roses Valley. This is where scenes in deserts are filmed for most mainstream movies.

I believe that Slavers Bay scenes for Game of Thrones (GoT) seasons 3 was filmed here. I am visiting Essaouria during this trip. Essaouria was called Astapor in the GoT series.

A bit more on The Atlas Mountains to follow and a blow by blow view of my climb and tour of the Atlas Mountains in further blogs. Until then, take care and speak soon.
