Why I climb mountains

Honestly, I am still working this one out but for now it seems that it is the only space where my mind empties itself of the everyday humdrum that consumes us, as my entire focus moves to my next step, because it could be my last. There is nothing like a reality check for the brain to block out unnecessary information.

Now I acknowledge that mountains are not for everyone. I know of friends who have climbed a mountain as a bucket list item and have indicated that mountain climbing are not what it is cracked up to be. They rather continue with offroad biking. Some find their release in places of worship on a weekly basis whilst others get a kick jumping off planes whlist others push their bodies doing ultra marathons. People find their space everywhere in life.

Sometimes we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere and sometimes, in the middle of nowhere, we find ourselves

The cynic in me thinks why settle for a 5 star accommodation when you can have an accommodation with a billion stars šŸ˜‰

The challenge of pushing ones body to its limits and then beyond is like a drug. I believe it is a primal feature of humankind to explore and to walk spaces not trodden on previously i.e. to explore and thus learn and grow.

Geographically, mountains are the visible signs of the regeneration process that the Earth goes through with the subduction of plates, continental plate movements, volcanoes, rift valleys and such. It is the stuff that makes the Earth what it is, a changing space for us Humans to explore.

Now, I am not an “out on the edge” kind of guy; my wife will kill me if I died on a mountain. I enjoy the unique perspective that mountains provide which only a few have had the privilege to see, behold and wonder in amazement. How better to live your life than to witness, first hand, the spectacle that is the geology of the Earth.

Some clever sod once told me that there are 2 important dates in one’s life;

“The day we were born and the day we find out why”

Strive to find your why and you will have found your Purpose in Life.
